Newsletters 2009NOVEMBER 2009 - Short Wave MCT IR Detectors There is an ongoing requirement for target identification beyond ranges that passive thermal imaging can achieve with practical aperture constraints. These requirements can be achieved by imaging in shorter wavelengths. The Swift and Swan Infrared Detectors, based on our world leading Mercury Cadmium Telluride (MCT) processes and established ROIC design, comprise compact, lightweight 320 x 256 Focal Plane Arrays with a 24µm pitch, Integrated Detector Cooler Assembly (IDCA) used for active imaging at the eye-safe 1.5µm wavelength. Swift offers a state-of-the-art solution for laser-gated imaging applications, providing extremely high sensitivity and fast temporal gating. The detector is based on avalanche photodiodes which provide almost noise-free gain under control of an externally applied voltage. An eye-safe 1.5µm pulsed laser is required to illuminate the target and the gated detector is synchronised to receive a return signal from that target range only. This eliminates intervening atmospheric back scatter and allows target isolation from background clutter, enhancing target identification capability. The dual mode Swan Infrared Detector is an enhanced version of the product, providing passive imaging in the MWIR band for the wide field surveillance phase of an engagement, and active imaging in the SWIR band for the long range target identification phase, all in the same device. Both Swift and Swan Infrared Detectors are available as stand alone devices or incorporated into active imaging cameras. For further information please visit our infrared detector product page or contact: infrared.sales@selexgalileo.com SEPTEMBER 2009 - 2 Colour Full TV MCT Detector CONDOR II The Condor II Dual Waveband Infrared (DWIR) detector is a Single Sensor Solution for high performance thermal imaging in the Medium Waveband (3-5µm) and Long Waveband (8 -10µm) infrared.Based on our world leading Mercury Cadmium Telluride (MCT) processes and established ROIC design, each of the 640 x 512 pixels in the array can be switched between medium and long waveband sensitivity mode by changing the bias voltage on the device, ensuring spatial coherence between the two bands. By integrating the photocurrent from each band in separate storage cells at the pixel, both bands can be captured and output within a single frame period optimising the temporal coherence between bands. The entire storage capacity for each pixel can also be decicated to either the Medium or Long wavebands, giving user selectable and interchangeable high performance operation. The combination of both medium and long wavebands provides exceptional Detection, Recognition and Identification over previous technology generations. Condor II is offered as an integrated detector cooler assembly (IDCA), with either a rotary or linear split cycle Stirling cooling engine. This provides significant advantages over alternative technologies such as InSb resulting in longer cooler life, less in-service support, and so lower through-life costs. Demonstrated during the SPIE Defence, Security and Sensing Exhibition in Orlando in 2009, this is a breakthrough in IR detector technology and is indicative of future trends in MCT detector developments. SELEX Galileo's medium wave detectors offer the benefits of high resolution, high sensitivity and low cost, and are available as integrated detector cooler assemblies in the following formats:

The Company has earned that position by supplying consistently high quality, high performance product, at competitive prices.Single element pyroelectric DLATGS infrared detectors have been manufactured by the Company for over 40 years. The process for doping Triglycene Sulphate (TGS) to form DLATGS was developed and patented in the early 1970s, and the product range now comprises 100's of variations as a result of developing custom products for specific customers' requirements. Our product range includes single element uncooled and thermoelectrically stabilised detectors, and the Company can offer a design capability for custom products, including linear and 2D arrays. Our latest product is a very small active area detector, WREN, just 0.25mm x 0.25mm, designed for IR Microscopy applications. The main benefit of this detector over single element MCT is that cooling is not required, eliminating the need for liquid nitrogen. Available in standard and high performance specifications, this detector has been proven in the field. The short stare time, typically 200 microseconds, gives blur free images, even when observing fast moving targets and reduces the need for electronic or mechanical stabilisation. An NETD as low as 20mK is achieved with on-chip processing with the operability typically at better than 99.5%. The Longwave Hawk offers exceptional performance in the 8µm to 9.4µm optical band and this can be extended if required and custom cold filters can be considered. The detector is offered as an integrated detector cooler assembly (IDCA) with either a rotary or split cycle Stirling cooling engine. Hawk Long Wave is the highest performance compact long wave infrared detector in production today. For further information please contact infrared.sales@selexgalileo.com |
